Meet celebrity chefs Bobby Flay, Wolfgang Puck, and Michael Mina at the Atlantic City food festival
Atlantic City, N.J., is set to host a who’s who of celebrity chefs at Savor Borgata at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City from Nov. 4 to 10. To mark the event, the hotel is running a social media contest for Facebook fans to win an overnight stay and two general admission tickets to the weeklong food festival.
To enter for a chance to win the contest, entrants must "like" the Savor Borgata Facebook page. The winner will be drawn Oct. 22.
Special menus; cooking demos; and Savor Borgata: An Evening with Borgata’s Culinary Masters featuring Bobby Flay, Stephen Kalt, Michael Mina, Wolfgang Puck, Michael Schulson, and Geoffrey Zakarian are highlights of the annual Savor Borgata.
Tickets to the final reception are $125 for general admission and $195 for premium access, which includes early admission at 7p.m. The Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa is offering special packages that include accommodation and tickets. A classic room at Borgata with two general admission tickets starts at $559 and a club room at The Water Club with two general admission tickets starts at $699.

My husband and I were hesitant to go to Angeline’s after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor, but after trying all the other restaurants in Borgata, we thought we’d give it a try. I must tell the true “foodies” who eat in the city, GO! It was excellent from start to finish! Our waiter Saul was knowledgeable, and friendly! I had the shrimp appetizer which was Devine. Cocktails were great. The dipping oil for the bread, excellent. Now to the main course, I had mammas lasgana which was very flavorful and not too cheesy, but very filling. The sauce was just like my Italian friends grandmas!
My husband had the bolognese which came out like a huge pinwheel! I’ve never seen bolognese served like this! I have a pic but it won’t load. My husband ate the whole thing! My advice is GO! If you like good food, not pizzeria prices. you won’t be disappointed

We made reservations for Angeline the day of, on a Saturday night and were able to be seated without issue (win #1). The decor and design is beautiful and subtly classic and not as DARK as every other hotspot is (win #2). We opted for cocktails to start, and really enjoyed them. Our waiter Dimitri was extremely knowledgeable and helped answer any questions we had about the menu. We had almost every vegetarian appetizer and opted for the wood-fired Branzino for dinner as well as pasta. I would say that we had a multitude of items from the menu and each item was better than the previous. We had dined at other restaurants in Atlantic City and did not find them to be up to par. I was very pleasantly surprised by how incredibly fresh, flavorful and original the menu items were. We had a wonderful dining experience and will be sure to come back again.
It definitely looks like it but doesn’t taste like it. I haven’t been at the Borgata for a while and some things never change. Still have to pay for parking and the restaurants here are awful.
Nothing here is really fine dining except for maybe the Wolfgang Puck restaurant here and that’s a maybe depending on what you order.
While Angeline is fine as a casual restaurant, it still won’t earn fine marks as one because the casual Italian in my neighborhood, Parm, actually makes its pasta fresh. Here, you would expect that for the price but no, you get supermarket spaghetti and it was undercooked as well.
The portions are small and very oily. The tasting board is a bit better but lacks variety and not generous.
I recommend sticking to casual dining since these fine restaurants close early at 9:30pm and you can’t even enjoy the game.
I did get lucky at the black jack table so may come back but will just stick to the casual bars.

Atlantic City's Borgata Announces Socially Distant Food Festival
The roaming tasting events may be gone, as will the massive crowds of foodies with wine glasses dangling from lanyards around their necks, but what remains is the essence of a mouth-watering culinary event. Atlantic City's Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa has redefined its annual event as Savor Borgata: Unmask the Flavor (November 20-21), an exclusive series of socially distant dining experiences.
"We can still Savor Borgata, but now we'll Savor Borgata more safely," said Becky Schultz, Vice President of Hospitality for Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa. "This year might look different, but our ability to create flavorful culinary experiences remains. By limiting our capacity, maintaining social distance, wearing masks, and interacting a bit differently, we'll ensure that Savor Borgata still serves as a memorable experience for our guests."

Mystic, named for the Mystic River on which it sits, is just two and a half hours from New York City, but feels worlds away thanks to its quaint New England vibe. There Is A God, I Finally Won .
Well we took another 3 day trip to Our Happy Place and really had a good time.
Left on Sunday morning very early and had no problem at all heading down to AC with a stop off for breakfast.
Hit the Borgata at the early time of 8:30 and went to Marcey so she could check us in.
Of course at that time of the morning on a Sunday no rooms were ready so we checked our bags and off we went to play.
My first stop was at my 5 cent Jackpot Party machine and stuck a few bills in that without any results so hit the Crystal 7 5 cent machine and had no hits at all on that one.
Decided to head over to my quarter Super Duces machine and began to play that and was getting a few hits when all of a sudden I hit the 4 Duces so that made me very happy to have a hit right at the start of my trip.
Then off I go to a 50 cent Super Duces machine to try my luck and I am still playing on my comped dollars so have not dug into my bank roll yet and then I hit 5 of a kind using just one wild card so hit $400 on that.
Now I am a happy camper and off I go to see Dan who is playing Black Jack and he is down so I give him a $100 of my winnings and tell him I am going to see if the room is ready and head up and will see him later to go eat.
I go to the bell desk and they make up my keys for me and I tell them to bring up the bags and off to the room I go which is 1949.
Now this room is way down the end of the hall and I am thinking I hope this is not to long of a walk for us cause Dan is still using a cane cause he has to have a total hip replacement on Feb. 22 and I have arthritis in the ankle which is sore all the time, sometimes worse than others.
But I did not want to wait for a room closer to the elevator so took this.
Room is very nice and I un pack and stick our clothes away and get the ice bucket filled and all that stuff and then stick my money in the safe and back down I go to the casino
Played awhile and could not hit a thing and was just throwing my money away at this point so went and found Dan and we go off to eat at the Borgata brunch.
Usually I am not a brunch type person cause I am a very picky eater and I cannot mix breakfast and lunch items.
I know it sounds silly but that is just me.
I had all lunch items and had some steak, ham and beef all of which were very good.
Had a few side items and really enjoyed it all
After eating went up to the room to rest some and Dan watched football.
I went back down to the casino around 4:30 and played so many machines and could do nothing but lose and lose some more so at 7 gave up and headed back to the room cause this was my TV night.
Watched Deal Or No Deal, Grease show where they are picking new stars for the show and then watched the Apprentice.
I skipped Without A Trace and washed up and headed back down to the casino and went to Super Duces but had no luck and so headed to Regular Duces Wild and no luck there either so finally went to 5 cent Jackpot Party (older version) and tonight it was hitting good so played there and got to the bonus round quite a few times and finally cashed out $400 and called it a night at 12:30.
They had some rain and snow during the night and when I got up around 6 it did not look to good out there but then again I could not see to well since it was still dark so back to bed I go.
Got up again around 7:30 and it did not look to bad now and cars were moving pretty good.
We took our showers and got dressed and headed down for the car but stopped to see Marcey.
She was busy but did ask her how the roads were and she said well salted
Had no problem getting over to Bally's which is were we parked and off to Gertie's we go but to the one in the walk way between Bally's and the Claridge.
We had bagels and muffins and I used comps to pay for it.
I had called Caesar's a few nights ago and told them I still was not getting any mail sent to me with offers and what is the problem
I have not gotten a coupon offer since July of 2006.
On my last trip in December I went to the TR desk at Harrah's and told them about my problem and the girl said it was clicked NO MAIL but she fixed it.
Well when I called this lady said it was still kicking back not to send me mail so she fixed it at all the casinos and now I should began to get offers again.
I said well what about my offers now and she said I had buy one get one free buffets but needed the coupon.
I said WELL what do I do and she said she will give me $10 in comps cause she cannot send me a coupon.
I took it but really think I got ripped off since I had no coupons sent to me in so long but really just so it gets fixed.
Anyway after we ate we split up and I played some in Bally's for a friend of mine and then headed over to Caesar's which I like much better than Bally's and I personally do not play much at all anymore in there.
I did not do to good this trip in Caesar's but had fun anyway.
I played Super Jackpot Party which I love and got some play and then found a open machine on the penny Top Dollar but oh it was a stinky machine and I could not do a thing so finally gave up on it.
Played penny All that Glitters and got some play but in the end lost on all the machines there.
Back at Bally's had a little time till I met Dan so I broke down and stuck a $10 in Cleo and got some play on her but lost there to.
Met up with Dan and he had a winning trip where I lost but we both had fun and decided to go to White House sub and pick up a sub for lunch.
I buy the entire sub and back we go to the Borgata and we shared half of the sub only for lunch.
I said, I keep forgetting how BIG these subs are so we will have the other for dinner and don't need to go out anywhere for dinner.
Went down to play some and lost, lost and lost some more
Back to throwing my money away again.
I am just walking around cause I am having no luck and I walk past this Super Jackpot Party machine and do a double take and walk back.
YES I did see right it is a PENNY machine. I swear it is the ONLY penny Super Jackpot Party machine in the place and if not it is the only one I have seen.
I thought they were all 5 cent machines in the Borgata.
I have seen penny one's in other casinos but not the Borg.
I also spot a penny Jade Monkey right around the back of this Jackpot Party machine so I play both of them and have some play but in the end it took my money.
Had to finally head to the room cause I was out of money.
Ate the other half of my sub and we shared a muffin we brought back from Gertie's.
We watched some TV and then got dressed and headed down to the comedy show.
This was one of the best shows we have seen in ages.
All 3 of these guys were to funny and we had a bunch of good laughs and really did enjoy the show.
After the show played some and just lost some more so finally put my tail between my legs and headed to the room.
This morning we got up around 8 and took our showers and ate in the room.
I had a pound cake and Dan a muffin and I made hot tea for us.
I then went for new ice for the ice bucket and could not get back into the room
Dan left me in and I tried his key which worked but not mine.
I head down to the bell desk where I had the keys made on Sunday and here the girl did not make the keys the same.
I had 2 nights and Dan had 1 night but they linked the nights so we did not have to check out and check back in but the girl did my key for 2 nights and Dan's for 3.
Stupid but we all make mistakes and she re did the keys and all was fine again.
Down to the casino we go and we both play 5 cent Joker Poker and Dan did lousy so he leaves to play Black Jack and I stay till I lose my money.
I played a few different machines and could do nothing so finally take a break and go to Bread and Butter for hot tea
Played some more with no luck so head back to the room to rest.
Then we go off to the lunch buffet and enjoyed that.
Had a slice of turkey which was good and I am not a fan of turkey.
Also had beef
Played on the Duces Wild machine again after lunch cause the Duces were up to $350 by then and I had been trying since Sunday to hit them but just kept losing my money.
Finally I hit them for the $350 so really made my day.
Back up to the room in time to watch NCIS which was good and then took my shower and headed back down for my last trip at playing.
Dan was played out so he stayed in the room tonight.
I was getting played out myself but had to give it one last whirl and sure glad I did.
First went to my Super Jackpot Party penny machine and it was hitting very well and played there for over a half hour and cashed out a $100.
Took the ticket and walked around trying different machines and hitting nothing.
Finally down to like $30 so decided to just go back to the penny SJP and stay there.
Well there was a guy there so could not get back on it and decided to just try a 5 cent Super Jackpot Party machine.
I was in the row all by myself, not another soul around and it is not really that late, like about 11:30 maybe.
Well I am just playing all 20 lines and 1 nickel per line and the machine is hitting like hell but every time I up the bet per line I cannot win a thing so I thought to hell with it, just play the 1 coin per line and leave it at that.
I hit the bonus round at least every 5 minutes and that is not a lie.
I am singing and dancing in my seat and having one hell of a good time.
I get the pooper and hit a party saver to boot, I swear to God, I just cannot lose on this machine.
For over a hour I play on it and had myself the best time I have had in ages.
I was talking to the stupid machine even.
I bet those guys in the eye in the sky where up there laughing their butts off watching me and guess they thought I was drunk.
Finally the machine turned cold so I cashed out a BIG $260 and called it a trip.
Back up in the room I tell Dan what a fun night I had and counted up my loot and ended the trip up $200.
Now that is not a big win by any means but I hardly ever win so for me that was a good trip.
Got up today, took our showers and headed to the breakfast buffet and sure was good as it usually is.
Packed up and were on the road by 9:30.
Hit no traffic and got home and now have to rest up and do a few loads of wash
We had another great trip and Dan ended up even so we both did good.
We hope to get back down the end of March but it depends on how Dan does with his surgery.
He did super with his knee replacement and the doc said he thinks he will do good with the hip replacement.
So that is our trip and hope you enjoy.

We also did not use the pool this trip and that is because we spent so much time in the casino playing.

The losing team(s) nominates chefs to be considered for elimination. Ramsay can also nominate chefs, and ultimately sends a chef home. At six chefs left, the teams merge to one, and the chefs compete as individuals.
Gordon Ramsay returned as the head chef, sous chefs Scott Leibfried of blue team and Gloria Félix of the red team, and Maître d' Jean-Philippe Susilovic as well.

Each week, the best member (as determined by Ramsay) from the losing team during the latest service period is asked to nominate two of their teammates for elimination one of these two is meant to be sent home by Ramsay. On some weeks, there is a variation in the nomination process, depending on the losing team's (or even winning team's) performance.

Three hundred chefs from all over America are welcomed to the new season of Hell's Kitchen, but only 16 chefs were called down and Ramsay tells them to cook him their signature dishes. The winner of this season will become head chef in Fornelletto at the Borgata in Atlantic City.
Signature Dishes: For once, half of the chefs received positive to average reviews. Carol, Ji, Andrea, Coi, Paula and Ben all impressed Ramsay with their dishes, while Wil and Robert received good feedback for taste, but were criticized for presentation and thin sauce respectively. LA's fish and chips were called "terrible" and Ramsay spit out Colleen's chicken enchiladas and Lacey's chicken and blackberry dish (Ramsay also berated Colleen for telling him she taught manners too when he spit it out). He also hated Danny's grilled bananas, deemed Charlie's dish a joke, graded J's dish an "F", and berated Giovanni for not being able to cook rice. Seth's honey-flavored ratatouille received the worst review, and when Seth laughed, Ramsay threatened to eliminate him on the spot.
Pre-Service: The teams were each told to give themselves a name. The men named themselves "Blues Brothers", while the women originally named themselves "Team Saffron", but changed it to "Spice Racks" after being called out by Ramsay. Charlie was instructed to shave prior to service. During prep, the men became irritated with Seth's lack of basic skills and slow work. In the red kitchen, Lacey walked out of prep due to feeling overwhelmed and disrespected by the rest of her team. Because of this, she prepared the dessert station poorly, and, minutes before service, Lacey and Coi got into an argument over the lackluster preparation of the desserts section. Coi angrily revealed this to Chef Ramsay when he asked what was wrong, saying "this station is fucked up", however Ramsay successfully managed to defuse the situation.
Service: Carol and Giovanni were chosen as waiters. In the blue kitchen, Giovanni struggled as a waiter, forgetting orders on numerous occasions. Ben and Robert served raw spaghetti (the latter was also called out for screaming over Ramsay when a ticket was being announced), but they managed to get the refire accepted and keep appetizers going out at a steady rate. Unfortunately, Danny overcooked scallops and then talked back to Ramsay after the latter scolded him, but Robert managed to calm him down and keep him focused. Seth, on meat, served raw and mangled lamb by attempting to resear it after slicing it, and Wil burnt gnocchi while falling behind on garnish, needing Robert, Ben, Charlie and Seth's help. A power outage happened during service, causing the kitchens to come to a halt, but Carol did very well as a waiter as she used this opportunity to give the customers alcohol. In the red kitchen, Lacey served raw scallops, and Colleen was scolded for patronizing the other chefs with needless instructions. She further angered Ramsay by putting mascarpone into an order of lobster spaghetti, despite the recipe not calling for it, cooking too much spaghetti at once, attempting to cook an order of spaghetti in a dirty pan, and accidentally putting sugar into a risotto instead of salt, leading to Ramsay calling it the worst risotto he had ever tasted. After customers began walking out, Ramsay shut both kitchens down. Ramsay gathered the customer comment cards, and the women won after Carol received an 88% above average customer rating, compared to 90% below average for Giovanni, and Ramsay declared Giovanni "the worst waiter in the history of Hell's Kitchen".
Elimination: Seth and Wil were nominated. Though all the men were sick of Seth's ineptitude, immature behavior and lack of basic skills and wanted him gone, Ramsay eliminated Wil for nominating himself, lacking Seth's passion, and poor performance on the garnish station.
Team challenge: The contestants were awakened early in the morning by a marching band, and were greeted outside by Chef Ramsay and two piles of garbage bags containing the discarded food from last night's service. Unlike seasons 2 & 4, where contestants had to sort through the trash, Ramsay ordered the contestants to fish scallops out of two large crates and carry them to the kitchen, leading to the day's team challenge of cleanly shucking as many scallops as they could in fifteen minutes. Andrea was told by Ramsay to sit out in order to even out both teams. The women went first. Carol scored eight, Paula scored only one, Coi scored six and Colleen scored five. LA, Ji, and Lacey scored eight, four and three respectively, the latter of which caused Lacey to become agitated. The women successfully shuck a total of 35 scallops. For the men, Ben scored only three, Danny scored nine and Giovanni scored an impressive thirteen of his fifteen scallops. Robert scored five, Charlie scored only two and Seth scored three, tying the score at 35-35. Last up was J. His first five scallops were rejected but his sixth - and last - passed, eking out a 36-35 victory for the men.
Reward/punishment: The men flew in a helicopter to Catalina Island, but Robert was forced to take a ferry due to his weight. While on a submarine ride, Seth demonstrated a level of knowledge of Gordon's personal life to the point that the guys jokingly believed that Seth was stalking him. When Robert finally arrived, with the long trip causing him to miss out on the day's events, it was time for the group to head back. Meanwhile, the women spent the day prepping a raw bar for the night's service. After the challenge, a dejected Lacey had retreated to her bunk in tears after being called out by Ramsay for her substandard performance (even though Paula had performed the worst for the women). Ji attempted to talk Lacey out of her funk, but to no avail. Following an argument between Lacey and Carol over Lacey's histrionics, Lacey claimed illness and remained in bed, not showing up in the kitchen until six hours into the punishment.
Service: Only thirty minutes before the start of service, Ji suffered an ankle injury after slipping on some oil that left her participation in doubt, but after receiving treatment she announced to Chef Ramsay that she would be taking part in the service. Robert and Paula were assigned as raw bar servers Robert's amiability impressed Jean-Philippe and the customers. Charlie undercooked and under seasoned a risotto and astonished Ramsay when he admitted he had never cooked one before, but Ben was able to bail Charlie out with his replacement. However, Charlie was soon in hot water again after he and Seth forgot to include lobster in the lobster spaghetti. Danny impressed Ramsay with his perfectly cooked lamb, but Ramsay got angry at Giovanni for delivering an undercooked salmon to the pass. However, thanks to Danny, the men were able to keep serving entrées at a steady rate. In the red kitchen, Carol got overwhelmed on appetizers and produced a risotto that stuck to the pan, but, thanks to Andrea taking control of the station, the red team managed to produce acceptable appetizers. Unfortunately, Colleen struggled on the fish station as she first burned three orders of scallops, forcing Lacey to jump in on Ramsay's orders and show her how to cook them. Colleen then later burned the outside of a piece of salmon and simultaneously left the inside raw, while also forgetting a John Dory on the same ticket. This led Ramsay to furiously question her credentials as a culinary instructor, and when she burned yet two more orders of salmon, Ramsay threw her out of the kitchen, demoting her to the raw bar and replacing her on the fish station with Lacey while bringing in Paula to help Coi on meat, after which things picked up. Ji's injury hobbled her throughout service, though she still performed well. To make things interesting near the end, Ramsay gathered both teams and declared that whoever first completed service was the winner. Both sides were neck-and-neck until Carol stalled the women on a dish that everyone else was ready for, allowing the men to emerge victorious.
Elimination: Colleen and Lacey were nominated. In a deleted scene included on the DVD release, the others attempted to persuade Carol to nominate herself in place of Colleen despite the latter's dreadful performance, hoping to ensure Lacey's elimination despite regarding Colleen as their worst cook, but Carol refused on the grounds that it could result in her being axed for costing her team the win. After Colleen and Lacey plead their cases for staying and before Ramsay could make a decision, Ji - who had admirably completed the dinner service in spite of her injury and was subsequently restricted to a wheelchair - announced to Ramsay that she wished to withdraw from the competition, fearing her physical state would be a hindrance to the women's success. She had lamented this earlier to her teammates right after the end of service. Andrea declared to Ramsay that a hobbled Ji was still far more effective than Colleen or Lacey, but Ramsay honored Ji's request and allowed her to leave, thus reluctantly sparing Colleen and Lacey from elimination. He then lauded Ji personally for her effort and her "phenomenal" performance, while allowing her to keep her jacket as a token of her bravery (this was the first time Ramsay had let a contestant keep their jacket, it became much more common in later seasons). After she bid a tearful goodbye to her teammates, she was wheeled by Andrea out of Hell's Kitchen, with the men giving her a farewell standing ovation for her gritty performance. Ramsay then called on the remaining contestants to draw from Ji's perseverance, which, he said, demonstrated "courage at its best." Despite withdrawing from the competition due to injury, she got her picture burned instead of the traditional coat hook and burning sequence unlike Vanessa Gunnell from season 4.
Team challenge: Both teams were awakened at six the next morning by the ringing of cowbells from sous chefs Scott and Gloria, and were taken on a field trip to a meat processing plant, where Scott showed the contestants how the meat was butchered and what parts of the cattle produced specific cuts. Back in the kitchen, the team challenge was to correctly label several cuts of meat, then attach the signs identifying the cuts to the proper locations on color-coded cow statues. J and Colleen got their teams off to good starts with five correct cuts out of eight on their respective statues, but then Seth and Lacey caused two caused major setbacks for their sides, effectively forcing both teams to start over. Ben eventually labeled all of the cuts correctly, giving the men their second consecutive challenge victory. Paula had the distinction of successfully completing both parts of the challenge for the women, but had been beaten to the task by the men both times.
Reward/punishment: The men flew to Sunstone Winery in Santa Ynez, California, where they enjoyed a wine tasting followed by a steak dinner. The women stayed behind to butcher two large sides of beef after hauling both into the kitchen. In addition, Scott presented them their lunch consisting entirely of offal, leading Lacey to vomit and cause a chain reaction of LA and Andrea upchucking while the others plugged their ears. Andrea, clearly traumatized by the repulsive meal and her having vomited multiple times as a result, desperately made the women promise to bond together and try harder to avoid future punishments.
Service: Hell's Kitchen opened for its first-ever "steakhouse" service, split into two two-hour seatings with one team cooking and the other serving, and vice versa. Robert was determined to have a good service, as it had coincided with what was to be his wedding day. During the first seating, Ben, misinterpreting a command from Ramsay, prepared six orders of dessert before any appetizers had been served, while Charlie struggled to keep up on the fish station and was oblivious to his cooking cloth catching fire, which Scott had to put out. Giovanni had multiple steaks come back from the dining room for being undercooked and overcooked (made even worse due to the fact he was an executive chef at a steak house) and eventually ran out of filets. Seth was ordered by Ramsay to cut more, but he then over butchered a tenderloin, wasting a great deal of meat in the process, and tried unsuccessfully to hide the scraps from Ramsay. The red team was slow to get orders to the kitchen, and Lacey had to return some appetizers due to not telling the diners what was on them while she also forgot about some of her tables on entrees, which put the blue kitchen behind. Ramsay ended the first seating after Giovanni revealed he was four minutes away on a New York strip, as their time limit was up. During the second seating, the red team got off to a slow start with Colleen losing track of the appetizers and Coi serving raw shrimp, but entrees ran smoothly as Andrea, showing no ill effects from yesterday's punishment, had all her steaks approved by Ramsay. However, Ben, Seth, and Giovanni nonetheless returned some of the steaks to the kitchen, but Ramsay confirmed that they were all cooked correctly to order and accused the men of deliberately writing incorrect tickets in an attempt to sabotage the women, which Seth admitted to in a confessional. The men, in turn, had felt the women intentionally took far too long in submitting their orders during the first service. Charlie also struggled in the dining room as he forgot which tables he had taken orders from and then dropped food onto one table. In the end, despite Andrea's strong performance, the women fell just three tables short of completing service within the time limit, due to Carol mistakenly cooking two New York Strip instead of two filet mignon. In the post-service mortem, Charlie and Lacey were named the worst servers on customer comment cards. The red team were named the winners.
Elimination: Seth and Charlie were nominated. Despite Seth's horrendous butchering of the filet, falsely accusing J of lying about the nominees, and annoying Ramsay and his teammates with an excessively long plea, Charlie was eliminated for his lack of progress over three services, as well as having been the men's weakest performer in both the kitchen and the dining room, with Ramsay feeling he was not ready to be a head chef.
Team challenge: Both teams cooked a special breakfast service for a group of 100 young football players and cheerleaders. Colleen became distracted by the cheerleaders, forcing Ramsay to order her back on her station, while Coi burned several pancakes. The men had an early lead but squandered it after Seth stumbled on scrambled eggs that he claimed were inspired by one of Ramsay's recipes. This gave the women their first challenge victory of the season. Ben and Danny later got into a heated argument in the dorms after Danny had boasted that he was the strongest cook on the men's team.
Reward/punishment: The women went camping for the day at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. The guys faced the arduous task of cleaning up both the dining room and kitchens in addition to prepping both sides for tonight's service. However, they failed to finish the red kitchen's prep by the time the women returned, due to Danny and Robert plotting to get Ben out.
Service: The women were missing their tomato butter sauce, which was supposed to have been made during the men's prep Chef Ramsay suspected sabotage, and his suspicions were only furthered when the sauce that Ben gave them was far too salty, leading to Danny properly preparing a new batch. Giovanni lagged on boiling the water for spaghetti, and a Caesar salad prepared by J included the butt from a head of lettuce, infuriating Ramsay. Ben cut the lamb chops too thinly, and when Ramsay asked Danny how long on the mashed potatoes, Danny did not respond immediately, causing Ramsay to threaten to throw him out. Seth proved to be the worst performer of the night as he undercooked some scallops, didn't pay attention when Ramsay called out a ticket, then was caught by Ramsay wiping a pan with a soiled cloth that he had just previously used to wipe his face. In the red kitchen, Coi pre-made pasta instead of cooking it to order, prepared two underdone lobster spaghetti that were short on lobster, then dropped one of the pans containing the replacements. LA and Colleen conflicted on the meat station, due to the latter's inexperience, sending up poorly trimmed wellingtons and cooking one order of beef Wellingtons too many. Ramsay finally had enough and declared both teams as losers, then sent the teams upstairs to decide which two members from each side should be up for elimination.
Elimination: Before asking for the nominees, Ramsay brought up the butt of lettuce to J, saying "that's how reputations got destroyed within minutes - butthead!". When Danny revealed the first nominee was Seth and the second nominee from the men was Ben, Ramsay's response implied they should've nominated J. When Lacey revealed the nominees were Colleen and herself, Ramsay was shocked that Coi wasn't nominated (she had actually attempted to nominate herself, but Carol persuaded the other women to nominate Lacey instead) but took Lacey anyway, as Coi had openly admitted her mistakes. After listening to the pleas, Ramsay sent Ben back in line and eliminated Seth for being a consistently terrible performer, much to the relief of the men.
Team change: Lacey was transferred over to the men's team, as the men were now three members down, and also because most of the women made it clear that they were not willing to continue working with her.
Team challenge: Both teams visited an Asian supermarket, where they purchased the ingredients needed for Asian-fusion dishes with limits of only 25 minutes to shop and $100. The mandatory ingredients consisted of one type of seafood, poultry, and meat, and both teams had an hour to prepare the dishes. Each dish was judged by Chef Ramsay and Epicurious editor-in-chief Tanya Steel. The red team's poultry dish, presented by Carol, was felt to be dry, while Robert's for the blue team was praised and earned a point. For the seafood dish, the red team earned a point with their "perfectly cooked" dish compared to the blue team's dish, which was oversalted. For the final dish, Andrea's dish was overwhelmed by spice, but the beef was cooked perfectly, while the blue team's dish had a good concept, but was ruined by the dish being undercooked. In a tough decision, Tanya gave the point to the red team, meaning the red team won the challenge 2-1.
Reward/punishment: The red team's winning dishes were featured on the Epicurious website. The women also spent the day sumo wrestling in oversized sumo suits, which included Ramsay taking down Jean-Philippe to everyone's amusement, and later imbibing on sake. The blue team made fortune cookies and folded origami for tonight's service. Lacey, having drawn the ire of her new teammates almost immediately at the outset as she had previously done with the red team, got back in their good graces when she successfully assisted the men with the origami.
Service: In addition to the regular customers, the night's patrons included a group of sumo wrestlers, both of whom ordered one of everything on the menu Ramsay split it down the middle between the kitchens. The teams enjoyed a strong start on appetizers fueled by Giovanni and LA's risottos, while Lacey surprisingly emerged as a leader on the blue team with a strong performance on garnish, but the meat station was a wreck on both sides: J undercooked his Wellingtons because the oven fan was on low, sent raw chicken to the pass and then forgot an order of lamb on a later ticket. In the red kitchen, Ramsay discovered a stash of discarded burnt wellingtons hidden underneath Andrea's station Andrea then became overwhelmed and stalled the red kitchen's progress, giving inconsistent timings to Carol on fish. In addition, Colleen was also scolded for leaving the oven door open when there were beef Wellingtons in there. Robert wasted a lot of food while preparing his dishes, due to not wanting to take anything up if he didn't feel it was adequate, and angered Ramsay further by not responding when Ramsay repeatedly addressed him as "Bobby," for which Robert mooned the confessional room camera during an interview while telling Ramsay to "kiss my ass." The final straw was when Colleen's pear dessert was returned because both the pear and the pastry were raw. With service a lost cause and Ramsay refusing any more returned dishes from Jean-Philippe, the kitchen was closed, with Ramsay calling it the worst performance so far. In a private meeting after the service, Robert explained that he did not respond to "Bobby" because that was the name of his abusive father and that it brought back painful memories from his childhood. Ramsay apologized and replied that he would respect Robert's wishes, adding that it would not have happened had he known about it beforehand. Giovanni and LA were selected as the best of the worst for their teams and were tasked with choosing a person for elimination, though Lacey was also singled out for praise for her leadership and strong performance.
Elimination: Giovanni nominated J while LA chose Andrea. Ramsay appeared to disagree with Giovanni's decision, heavily implying that he thought Robert should have been chosen instead, but he accepted the two nominees after Giovanni explained his reasoning that Robert recovered from his mistakes that night better than J. However, he ordered both J and Andrea back in line and told Robert to wake up. Instead, Colleen was axed on the grounds that, after five terrible dinner services, Ramsay could no longer tolerate her constant mistakes, but, as she took off her jacket, he praised her tenacity and fight and told the remaining contestants to follow that example.
Team challenge: Hell's Kitchen would be hosting a bar mitzvah for the first time, about which Ben, being of Jewish heritage, was particularly enthusiastic. For the team challenge, the chefs had to create gourmet versions of chicken soup, brisket, and burgers, the favorite foods of Max Reuben, the young guest of honor. Giovanni won the soup challenge over Andrea, while LA won with the brisket over Ben. Max liked both Robert's and Carol's burgers, but chose Robert's only because he didn't like blue cheese (which the team had warned Carol about earlier), giving a 2-1 win to the blue team.
Reward/punishment: The blue team were treated to a day at Skin Haven spa while the red team had to set up the dining room complete with a basketball court and dance floor while the flamboyant emcee Francisco was brought back for a third go-round in Hell's Kitchen, much to Jean-Philippe's annoyance and disdain. Carol and Andrea sniped at each other throughout the punishment. During service, the red team received their second part of the punishment where they had to lift Max during the Hora.
Service: Andrea started off roughly on appetizers when she didn't have enough mushrooms in her risotto, but soon got back on track. The women were then summoned to the dining room for the second part of their punishment, which was carrying Max on a chair during the celebration dance, before returning to the kitchen. Max's entrees were to be served first on Ramsay's orders, but Coi first forgot to bring the raw burgers into the kitchen then struggled to cook them she first brought them up cold due to LA's suggestion and then got overwhelmed when the rest of her team swarmed her station. Fortunately, she managed to bring up acceptable burgers, but her problems on the meat station continued as her first brisket servings were also undersized, and LA's help proved largely ineffectual. In the blue kitchen, Lacey had trouble heating up the briskets and conflicted with her team, J forgot to present a salad with no dressing, and Ramsay criticized Danny for serving food on dirty plates, telling him to clean up his workstation (Danny thought it wasn't his fault as the plates were getting dirty as they were being garnished along the line). In the dining room, Francisco was carrying a cake for Max but dropped it when he bumped into Jean-Philippe, angering the latter. At the end, both teams completed service and Ramsay presented Max with a special surprise: the Harlem Globetrotters. During cleanup, the hostilities between Carol and Andrea continued, as Carol said that she had wanted to punch Andrea in the throat she insisted she made the remark in jest when Andrea called her out on it during deliberation on the patio. The blue team won for their level of consistency during service.
Elimination: Andrea was chosen as Best of the Worst, much to the disgust and confusion of her team. However, Andrea struggled to come up nominees for elimination, admitting to Ramsay that she didn't like to blame people for their mistakes when she was just as responsible as some of them. Ramsay became irritated that Andrea hadn't made her decision, so she quickly nominated LA, feeling that she had yet to perform as more than a line cook, and Coi for her awful performance that night. As according to plan, they, along with Carol, declared Andrea as the worst however, Paula named Coi instead which led to Coi being the next chef eliminated due to her mistakes on the meat station, though she received praise for her attitude.
Team change: Before the start of the challenge, Chef Ramsay transferred Giovanni to the red team, which was two members short after Lacey had been transferred to the blue team.
Team challenge: After tasting six different salmon tapas from one of Ramsay's restaurants, the chefs had 20 minutes to make their own with leftovers from the previous service, with the teams going head-to-head. During the challenge, Lacey was unable to come up with an idea for a dish and had to take Ben's suggestion of making a bruschetta. Paula and Danny went head-to-head with their red meat-based dishes, both of them earning a point for their teams. Lacey and LA's dishes were unique, but Lacey undercooked her leeks and LA's soup was tasted foul, so neither of them earned a point. Robert won the point over Carol when she mistook balsamic vinaigrette for soy sauce. Andrea, meanwhile, managed to even out the score for both teams for her ravioli dish over J's lobster broth, which Ramsay deemed overly simple. In the final round, both Ben and Giovanni impressed with dishes, though Ramsay ultimately chose the latter's surf and turf. After the challenge, Giovanni urged his new teammates to put their differences aside and work together in the name of having a successful service.
Reward/punishment: The red team visited Hollywood Park for a day of watching horse racing with Ramsay. The blue team prepped both kitchens for that night's service, then unloaded and cleaned small tapas plates. During prep, Lacey continually complained about the amount of work and argued with her team. Due to feeling disrespected by the men, she walked out of the kitchen and threatened to quit. She was eventually talked back inside by Ben.
Service: Carol served overcooked risotto, then revealed that J overcooked both teams' rice during the prep, rendering it inedible and forcing Ramsay to take the risotto off the menu for the night. J then repeatedly sent raw and burned salmon entrees to the pass. When he eventually did manage an acceptable serving, he forgot to bring the sauce up to the pass, forcing Ramsay to pull him aside and issue him a warning behind closed doors. Ben once again struggled on the meat station he first fell behind on cooking the beef wellingtons and then served them cold while being slow to bring up the sauce. Afterwards, Ramsay found him about to cook Wellingtons on a dirty tray and threatened him with ejection. J was eliminated on the spot after overcooking scallops, with Robert taking over the fish station. I love that there is so much information offered about the variety of ingredients that the recipes utilize. There is good information AND there are good tips. I think that is a huge asset to this book.

For the rest, I would need to plan ahead or quick stop by the store on the way home to pick up chicken breasts, onion powder, unsalted butter, fresh thyme, fresh rosemary, fresh garlic, smoked paprika and canola oil. Good grief.

I was happy to have the chance to review this cookbook by Chef Zakarian because I really enjoy watching him in his roles as a competitor and as a judge/mentor and I was sure I would find his advice on stocking a kitchen pantry helpful.
My Perfect Pantry: 150 Easy Recipes from 50 Essential Ingredients by Geoffrey Zakarian (with Amy Stevenson and his wife Margaret Zakarian) begins with a list of essential spices and flavorings it is helpful to have on hand in any kitchen. Of the list I was happy to see I had 16 of the 19 on hand, and one (kosher salt) was something I just had run out of and hadn't replaced yet. I felt like I was off to a good start since whole cloves and celery salt weren't everyday staples in our kitchen, but the rest of the items (like garlic powder, cumin and vanilla extract) were all spices I was comfortable using. This was a short list that made up the "ground floor" of the flavors in several recipes and that were used often in the book.
The list of 50 essential ingredients was accompanied by a page number where you found all kinds of helpful information and tips about each item in his perfect pantry. It included how long you could store the item, if it needed to be refrigerated after it was opened, and often a brief history of the food or condiment and where it originated. Chef Zakarian is also great at letting you know his preferred form of the ingredient and the reason behind his choice. For example, he suggests using tuna that is packed in olive oil to compliment its flavor and to use canned chick peas and black beans rather than the dried versions to save time and effort.
I found out tons of facts about the ingredients themselves (cinnamon bark is from an evergreen tree in the laurel family and ketchup was first sold by H.J. Heinz in 1876), and truly appreciated that the accompanying recipes were "very doable even for someone new to cooking" as the author states in his "note to the home cook" at the start of the book. Most if not all of the recipes seem approachable and there are a few that sounded so incredibly delicious I was sad that I didn't have the fresh produce and proteins needed to make them readily available. I am sure I will enjoy the almond crusted pork chops with apples, the savory spiced bean dip and the maple brown sugar rice pudding recipes when I make them. The ingredients are simple and the instructions are precise and easy to understand so I will feel confident trying my hand at them.
Of the 50 ingredients I have 31 waiting to work their magic on my pantry's shelves. There wasn't a single item that was unfamiliar to me even if I didn't have it at the moment. Of the 19 I was missing, I can honestly say there were only three I have never purchased. Those were instant espresso, white wine vinegar (I never knew these existed although I have have instant coffee and rice wine vinegar already which could be substituted for these in a pinch), and anchovies. I never imagined myself buying these salty fish. When I was a teenager I worked in a church and helped one of the priests make the most delicious Caesar salad dressing I had ever tasted. It used whole anchovies in the recipe and I am excited to buy some and try my hand at the dressing that is featured in this book. I hope it tastes as good as the one I remember, and I am excited that the suggestions will help me to branch out and try new things. There were also some really unexpected uses of the pantry ingredients. The gelatin recipes include a meatloaf that relies on the gelatin to give it texture without the use of additional binders. This and the popcorn soup and ice cream recipes were some of the biggest surprises. It will be a joy to test these out and be a little adventurous. There is also a recipe for Chicken Vinegar with cinnamon candies that Zakarian made on an episode of Iron Chef. I loved that he included these interesting and fun ideas to show the versatility of the pantry ingredients.
I am truly looking forward to shopping for some additional pantry ingredients this week and I am sure Andy will be happy for me to practice my cooking skills on these new recipes. I’m thankful for the review copy of a book that allowed me to peek into how Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian sets up his kitchen. The Chef suggests stocking up on specific essential spices in small quantities and replacing them at least once a year to keeping things fresh. He first lists nineteen essential spices in alphabetical order, starting with Allspice. I liked that they included a two page color spread of all the spices he mentions pictured in small containers with the names of the spices bolded underneath the container. I found this helpful to see what the ingredients looked.
The Chef then goes on to list fifty basic essential items everyone should have in their pantry. They too are listed in alphabetical order starting with Almonds and ending with yeast. Chef Zakarian tells about the item first one is Almonds – where it comes from, how they are sold in the store listing the different forms you might encounter (he did the same with the spices). Tips on storing and other helpful tips. Then there are three very different recipes that have almonds in them. They are 1. Almond-crusted pork chops with apples 2. Grilled Salmon with Almonds Tarragon Romesco 3. Chocolate Almond Bark. Ingredient number 42 is Tea – Earl Gray 1. Earl Grey Iced Tea with Iced tea cubes 2. French Toast with Earl Grey Syrup 3. Bomboloni with Earl Grey Cream. (there are so many creative and fun dishes inside this book there are three for each item mentioned).
I really like how this cookbook is set up. I love the fact that each ingredient listed has three recipes and a color picture of the finished product. I also appreciated that the three dishes are all pictured – it’s visually appealing to have them all together - then he goes on to the next essential ingredient and recipes. I like how he gives each ingredient and recipes their time to shine.
This reminded me of the show chopped where they have the Chef’s open a basket to reveal all the ingredients inside – then they have to be creative with the ingredients in thirty minutes. I feel with this book I might have a chance to create an amazing meal with each ingredient Chef Zakerian lists and do it at my leisure – not under the pressure of 30 minutes. I feel with this book I can begin to think outside the basket and use every day ingredients in fresh and creative ways my whole family will love.
Chef Zakarian goes on to say, “I find that having a well-stocked, well-cared-for pantry makes all the difference in the end result. I have a saying, “I would rather be looking at it then for it.” …you don’t need a large pantry to have success in the kitchen…I have a strong belief in the basics. I like natural ingredients prepared in ways that enhance their inherent flavors…I don’t keep an overly stocked refrigerator and freezer, and I try to get to the grocery a few times a week for anything fresh…you can definitely cook without a refrigerator, but it is nearly impossible to create a meal worth eating without a pantry.”
I can’t wait to try ALL 150 recipes. They have easy to find ingredients, the recipes are eye appealing and the instructions are easy to follow with not a lot of steps. My husband looked over this book (since we both like to watch Chef Geoffery Zakarian in the cooking channel) and said that he wants to make (not just try) several of these recipes (a win win for both of us). This book is a keeper! I’m excited about the cooking and eating fun my family will have in the months to come! This books a keeper and one I’ll be referring to often.

My Perfect Pantry by Geoffrey Zakarain with Amy Stevenson and Margaret Zakarian is a wonderful new book where Chef Zakarian teaches readers how to stock a basic pantry and create a host of simple, yet creative recipes.. People may know Geoffrey Zakarian from being a Chopped judge or from being an Iron Chef. I was expecting a lot of fussy recipes, but was pleasantly surprised to see that My Perfect Pantry really does include great, simple recipes. The recipes aren’t just the same renderings that you have seen before, they all have unique twists and updates. Whether it’s making Popcorn Soup or adding gelatin to Meat Loaf as a binder the recipes contain twists.
Chef Zakarian’s pantry staples in My Perfect Pantry include everything from pasta, maple syrup, popcorn, condensed milk and all manner of easy to find ingredients. He points out that with a well-stocked pantry (he uses a base of 50 ingredients) many recipes can be created by the simple addition of fresh produce and protein. His sumptuous looking Marinated Flank Steak with Mashed Sweet Potatoes is prepared with his own BBQ sauce recipe (also included in the book), so in some cases you can prepare some of your own pantry staples. He also gives suggestions for proper store and preparation for other pantry basics.
Reading My Perfect Pantry is also a visual feast due to the beautiful food photography. I’m so grateful that there’s a reference picture for each completed dish as well as some beautiful pictures of pantry staples. I was awestruck by the Tuna Salad Sandwich and wondered how he got it to look so amazing. Thanks to the picture of the canned tuna in olive oil (a recommended staple) I now know what my tuna should look like. We’ll hope my sandwich turns out to be as delicious looking too.
The recipes in My Perfect Pantry are very clearly and concisely written. I like books that can balance simplicity with clarity and I feel this book does an excellent job of doing just that. There are tons of different recipes from among the 150 contained in the book. Every type of food from soups, main courses and desserts are represented. Different cultures as well as kid-friendly recipes (I was so pleased to see that my own fried chicken really looks like Chef Zakarian’s Family Chicken Finders) are found in this book. Wonderful recipes from Maple Buttermilk Pork Roast and Brown Sugar Pie are on my short list of recipes to sample from My Perfect Pantry.
I would recommend My Perfect Pantry for either a beginning cook or an experienced cook. Chef Zakarian truly helps a home cook create a kitchen atmosphere that encourages basic food done beautifully, created with a well-appointed pantry that can benefit anyone.

But Geoffrey Zakarian just doesn’t use any kind of pantry ingredients, he uses the simple everyday ingredients and turns them into superstars. Of course still traumatize from my broke college days of ketchup sandwiches I had my doubts about this cookbook. Nonetheless. with cookbook in hand. I headed to my pantry.
First, I had to check to see if the 50 ingredients was really as essential as Geoffrey Zakarian claims… and if these items were actually in my kitchen pantry. I had 43 out of 50 of Geoffrey Zakarian’s essential pantry items, not bad, we are off to a good start.
Second, I did something a little different, I usually read a cookbook cover to cover before I kitchen test. This time I wanted the element of surprise…yes…I am keeping the spirit of the Iron Chef going. I randomly grabbed (4) four items out of my pantry and headed to the kitchen to begin my adventure.
So what was the four items? First…ketchup…I know…I know…I was just as surprise as you.
The second item…Earl Gray Tea Bags and the Third item…Chocolate…And last but not least…Canned Tuna. So what were the winning recipes? For the ketchup we kitchen test the recipe “Ketchup-Glazed Cornish Hen” I didn’t have Cornish Hen, so we substitute with good ole…Chicken.
We made a lovely picture of “Earl Grey Iced Tea With Iced Tea Cubes” and I don’t know why I never thought about making this before. The canned tuna was used for making one of my absolute favorite salads “Salad Nicose” and for dessert we used the chocolate to make “Chocolate Dipped Candied Oranges” and I have to say everything was delicious.
Considering that all these items were just random items out of pantry I ended up with a pretty nice dinner. The recipes were flavorful and simple to make, I did finally read the cookbook cover to cover and I cannot wait to make Popcorn Ice Cream…so stay tune for more… we will definitely be cooking our way through this cookbook.

Then there are the pantry staples, again 50 items that will last a while. You can keep these on hand and just snag something off the shelf, make a marvelous meal!
If, that is, you have picked what you’re wanting to make and have the relevant fresh ingredient on hand. That’s the downside on this cookbook: on the one hand, I was hopeful it would give me ways to use just what I have. That is not what you get here, and I think the let-down is more on the marketing and description than it is on the author.
So, keep in mind that you will need to gather a few fresh ingredients to go alongside the staples and foundation spices listed. Some of them are certainly normal for the American kitchen: chicken, ground beef, eggs, but you just want to make sure.
I would recommend this one for someone past the beginner stage of cooking, or as a base for a big group gift-giving event. Picture throwing in with 20 friends to equip a newly married couple with this book and the 100 stable staples mentioned—there’s a great use for it.
Otherwise, it’s good. The food turns out well, but you may care for “Spicy Peanut Butter Slaw.”
I know I didn’t. So, your mileage will vary, but on the shelf beside a few others, a useful cookbook.
